Learn the art of audio describing film for audiences with low or no vision.

BlackStar Projects is excited to announce our second Audio Description for Film training program. We are selecting a cohort of Black, Brown, and Indigenous candidates to receive a week-long training in the art of audio describing film for audiences with low or no vision. Candidates who successfully complete the training are encouraged to apply for paid work audio describing films for the BlackStar Film Festival, as well as other films related to BlackStar Projects.

The training will teach the basic principles of audio description, using practical guidelines and real examples. The training focuses on learning by doing, and provides many opportunities for participants to practice describing. By the end of the training, participants will gain a deeper understanding of how to think like an audio describer, and will have the tools to begin to audio describe.

BlackStar’s Audio Description for Film is a virtual training program that takes place over three evenings: Monday May 15, Tuesday May 16, and Thursday May 18 from 6-8:30pm EDT and will be led via zoom by audio describer Liz Gutman from IDC Digital. Applicants must be available for each evening session. BlackStar will offer a $400 stipend for the training. Bilingual and multilingual candidates are encouraged to apply.

To apply, fill out the application form by Monday April 24. Only shortlisted candidates will be contacted.
