An Afternoon with a Gnawa

A film still from An Afternoon with a Gnawa shows a black-and-white image of a Black man standing in front of a view of the desert. The man is facing forward, wearing a striped vest and a square cap. In the distance, there’s a flock of birds across a gray sky.

The Gnawa inhabit ordinary and unordinary worlds, and their music and song create passageways between the two. This experimental nonfiction short gives a brief entryway into these worlds through an encounter with Mustafa, a Gnawa musician who lives in Rabat.
