Scapegoat

Réunion island director, Nicolas Séry, poses the question of the small role played by his island’s creole language and history in society, asking why they remain so undocumented and so poorly represented both in France and on his island. The act of filming reunion characters speaking creole is therefore a militant act in the eyes of Nicolas. In 2017 he joins « Talent La Kour », a scenario writing workshop created by Cinékour in collaboration with the nationwide CNC initiative « Talents en court ». This helped him pitch his film at the Comedy Club in Paris which in turn allowed him to meet Mondina film producer Anne Berjon. In 2021, his first film « The Sound Of Sugar Cane Flowers », tells the story of Ray, a teenager caught between his traditional roots and the modern world. This short film will go on to be selected by several festivals. In 2023 he joins HLM sur court(s) and successfully answers a request for proposals by Canal + Réunion and their « S’engager pour l’avenir » project with his second short film « Scapegoat ». This film shines a light on the racism encountered by mahoran, comorian and Muslim population on Réunion island. This comedy aims to hold a mirror to the viewer’s face, forcing them to face themselves.
